Medical Records

This module provides an overview of medical record activities, including preparation, maintenance, handling, and storage. Students also examine record control policies and procedures and purging and long-term storage of files.


Unit: Medical Records Word Search

In this activity, students complete a word search game with medical record terminology. A class discussion about terms can follow.

In this unit, students will learn about: the importance and types of medical records and maintaining their accuracy and confidentiality. They will understand electronic medical records and their advantages and disadvantages.

Unit: Filing Equipment and Systems

In this unit, students will learn about: the basics of filing systems, including the necessary equipment and supplies, the five steps of the filing procedure, and the benefits of a color-coding system.

Unit: Alphabetical and Numerical Filing

In this unit, students will learn about: filing medical records alphabetically and numerically, including indexing and alphabetizing names; straight numeric, terminal digit, and middle digit numeric filing; and creating cross-references.

Unit: Medical Records Management

In this unit, students will learn about: daily records maintenance, including creating, finding, editing, and deleting files; active, inactive, and closed records; and guidelines for purging and storing old records.

Unit: Reflection Questions

In this activity students will journal about how to keep medical records complete and accurate, describe situations where EMR might not be the best option, and debate alpha vs numerical filing. A class discussion can follow.


Unit: Medical Records Practice

In this activity students will assemble a folder and a record, label the folder, and then appropriately file the folder alphabetically and numerically.


Unit: Current Event

Students will review articles for information related to a topic in the module. Once an article is found, students complete a Current Event form.
