Exploration Activity: Review Lab Equipment
In this activity, students demonstrate the proper use and care of the lab equipment such as CPR mannequins, PPE, and an AED.
Phase 2: Learn & Practice
Unit 1: Introduction
In this unit, students will learn about Basic Life Support (BLS) and why it is important. Students will also learn statistics surrounding cardiac arrests in the United States and the chains of survival. In addition, students will understand general aspects of cardiac arrests, such as how defibrillation helps and what are shockable rhythms.

Unit 2: Adult BLS
In this unit, students will learn how to perform one- and two-person adult BLS rescues and high-quality adult CPR; the importance of teamwork during a rescue; how to use an AED on adults and older children; and how to recognize and handle opioid overdose emergencies.

Unit 3: Pediatric BLS
In this unit, students will learn how to perform one- and two-person pediatric BLS rescues, how to perform high-quality pediatric CPR, and how to use an AED on pediatric victims.

Unit 4: Airway Obstruction
In this unit, students will learn about airway obstructions and how to identify a choking victim; clear airway obstructions; administer abdominal thrusts and back blows on adults and children; and back blows and chest thrusts on infants.

Unit 5: Learning Activities
In this unit, students have the choice of two learning activities to practice what they have learned in the module. In the first activity (One-Person Adult Rescue), students must choose the correct actions to save a man who has suffered a cardiac arrest. In the second activity (Review Challenge), students test their BLS knowledge using a Jeopardy-style game.

Phase 3: Reflect
Activity: Reflection Questions and Discussion
In this activity, students reflect about and discuss various aspects of cardiac arrest and basic life support during cardiac arrest events.
Phase 4: Reinforce
Activity: Emergency Scenarios
In this activity, students create emergency scenarios that require Basic Life Support care. The students then must list the actions required to handle the emergencies.
Activity: Current Event
Students will review articles for information related to a topic in the module. Once an article is found, students complete a Current Event form.
