Building Momentum Through Certifications and Dual Credit in Louisiana

Turning Coursework into Momentum at East Feliciana High School
At East Feliciana High School in Jackson, Louisiana, science teacher Cedric Walker is using iCEV to give students something he calls momentum: a head start on college, careers, and everything that comes after high school.
Walker, a 10-year veteran of the school, teaches a course sequence that moves students from conservation biology into Louisiana Wetlands and Ecology, culminating in the Ducks Unlimited Ecology Conservation & Management Certification offered through iCEV, all as part of a dual-enrollment partnership with Louisiana State University (LSU).
The partnership began when school leaders sought to add more weight to the diplomas students were earning. "LSU was gracious enough to offer us this opportunity to do a dual enrollment course with them," Walker recalls. "Once that got connected with the iCEV program, it all came together." Sophomores now graduate from the course sequence with both college credit and an industry-recognized certification.
For Walker, the value of those certifications is simple: "Vital. Paramount. Any other synonym you want to use." He sees them as a way to open doors that students didn't know existed. "That's the good thing about the platform. iCEV connects career fields with what they're doing."
The curriculum has also made the material feel personal. Students who initially assume the course is "just about ducks" quickly discover it's about the world around them. "Once they find out how the subject matter relates more directly to our lifestyle and our culture here in Louisiana, they become more interested," Walker says. "This is giving them answers that they never thought about or just never knew."
Inside the classroom, iCEV has transformed how Walker teaches. Auto-graded assessments give students immediate feedback and the chance to retry until concepts stick, while progress tracking replaces hours of hand-grading. "That is just convenience at its best to me," he says. The structure has also empowered students to take ownership of their learning: "It's given me a chance to be a little more hands-off. The students just take the lead. They hit the ground running."
His advice for teachers considering iCEV? "Use your resources. The curriculum, the lesson plans, the videos, the activities, the student notes: that's all there to help. Use it all."
