CTE Success Story

From Small Engines to Big Impact: iCEV Helps Shape Michigan’s Workforce

Michigan’s small engine CTE programs are using iCEV to give students an ideal building block toward credentials and fulfilling technical careers.

Strengthening Small Engine Education Across Michigan

Career and Technical Education programs throughout Michigan are finding new ways to align classroom instruction with industry standards. Many have turned to iCEV to help bridge that gap. At Lapeer County ISD, Power Sports and Equipment instructor Kevin Thomas uses the EETC Principles of Small Engine Technology Certification hosted on the iCEV Testing Platform to prepare students for more advanced industry-recognized credentials and real-world technical roles. The Equipment and Engine Training Council (EETC) develops industry‑aligned certifications for the small engine and power equipment workforce. Employers recognize EETC credentials as proof of job‑ready skills in maintenance, diagnostics, and repair.

After piloting the certification in 2023, Thomas saw immediate growth. Ten students earned their small engine certification that spring, and by 2024, that number rose to 34. Today, his program uses iCEV and the EETC Principles of Small Engine Technology Certification hosted on the iCEV Testing Platform as an essential first step in preparing seniors for the more advanced EETC Four-Stroke Engine exam, a highly respected credential in the small engine and power equipment industry.

Accessible, Real-World Learning for Every Student

For Thomas, the strength of the iCEV curriculum lies in its practical relevance and accessibility. Students stay engaged through self-paced lessons, interactive content, and built-in accommodations such as read-aloud features and visual supports. These tools create an inclusive learning environment that allows every CTE student to progress confidently.

iCEV’s lesson plans and flexible pacing also support instructors by simplifying daily planning and helping them deliver consistent, high-quality instruction.

“It is easy for students to navigate, and they can work at their own pace,” Thomas said. “I have gotten zero negative feedback.”

Credential Gains that Translate to Real-World Career Outcomes

The results speak for themselves. Several of Thomas’s students have already earned both the EETC Principles of Small Engine Technology Certification hosted on the iCEV Testing Platform and the more advanced EETC credential. Many have moved directly into full-time technician roles across Michigan, proving that strong CTE programs and high-quality credentialing can change student trajectories in powerful ways.

Preparing Michigan Students for In-Demand Technical Careers

Through iCEV, small engine programs like those at Lapeer County ISD are equipping students with foundational skills that lead to multiple certifications, strong employability, and rewarding careers in power equipment, outdoor machinery, and related technical fields. The combination of accessible curriculum, industry relevance, and proven outcomes continues to expand opportunities for CTE learners statewide.
