Lesson Resources:
In order to do your best work as a cosmetologist, you will need the proper haircutting tools. Tools that are well-made of high-quality materials will be the most durable and reliable. You'll also need to follow certain procedures to clean, maintain, and disinfect your tools.
The tools you will use in haircutting include:
- Haircutting shears
- Texture shears
- Razors
- Clippers
- Trimmers
- Combs
- Sectioning clips
Follow these steps for disinfecting non-porous, multiuse haircutting tools, including shears, razors, clipper guards, combs, etc.:
- Remove any debris from tools first with a scrub brush in warm soapy water.
- Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a clean towel.
- Put on gloves and eyewear for safety.
- Mix the disinfectant according to the manufacturer's directions. Make sure water is in the container prior to putting in the disinfectant solution in container.
- Use tongs or gloves to gently place tools/equipment into the disinfectant solution, without splashing. Make sure all items are completely submerged into the solution and soak for the recommended time.
- Remove with tongs, gloves, or scoop.
- Rinse thoroughly and dry.
- Place in a clean, dry, and closed disinfected container for storage.
- Make sure all containers are labeled properly for contents.
