Developed with Caterpillar operators and engineers, this course pairs the theory behind excavator operation with hands-on practice on the Cat® Simulators excavator, so learners understand not just how to run the machine but why each technique matters.

About This Certificate

Learners demonstrate foundational knowledge of excavator operation and applications through this certificate. Topics include machine controls, digging, trenching, loading and jobsite awareness.

Lesson Outline:

  • Walkaround. Learn pre-operation machine inspection procedures.
  • Control Familiarization. Learn and understand operator controls and dashboard symbols.
  • Maneuvering Machine. Practice tight maneuvering and bucket penetration. Learn how machine position and center of gravity affect stability and safe lifting.
  • Raking the Green. Rake the bucket in a straight line and determine bucket payload.
  • Over the Moon. Practice avoiding onsite impacts and damage while positioning the bucket to follow an arc.
  • Trenching. Use the bucket to excavate a trench and understand maximum allowable slope.
  • Backfilling. Learn to properly backfill a trench.
  • Quick Coupler. Learn to change work tools using the machine's quick coupler system.
  • Truck Loading. Learn the "Over the Rail" loading technique.

How the Course Works:

Coursework is delivered through the SimScholars® curriculum, a learning platform with guides, videos, how-to graphics and interactive lessons built around the excavator's controls and technologies. Instructors can track individual and group progress in the classroom or remotely, and an offline mobile app lets learners complete coursework on a tablet without an internet connection.
